The Evolution of Digital Media

In the early 1980s, the major film studios took on prominent VCR manufacturers in a battle to suppress home video recording technology. This new analog system could record and reproduce television and movies with little to no effort and very little cost to the consumer. This shift in power from major media studios to the consumer was only the beginning of an even larger revolution that would take place almost 20 years later when digital media — in the form of movies, music, and more — would become easily accessible and transferable to average consumers through advancements in high-speed Internet. Websites like www.direct.tv also make it easier for anyone to be updated about the best entertainment deals.

Although the major movie studios felt threatened by the invention of the VCR, the technology was inferior to live television and in-theater movies because the analog format degraded over time. That simply means that the more a videocassette, audio tape, or vinyl LP, was played or copied, the quality of the video and/or audio tracks lost clarity and sharpness. However, this problem was fixed with the advent of digital media formats.

Digital media audio and video formats do not degrade over time. This is because digital media is simply made up of information, which is, at its very center, binary code — 1s and 0s. With analog media, some sort of physical contact is needed — the needle on a record, the heads on a VCR — this physical interaction of the storage media and the media player causes the source to decay. But this is not so with digital media. The source code for the media is read through a digital eye (as is the case with CD and DVDs), or simply read directly from a hard drive, as is the case with mp3’s and other digital media files.

Although major media companies have had battles over the years with digital piracy, through platforms like iTunes, major studios and record companies are finally coming to embrace the advancements made in digital media.

Advancements in Smartphones

Mobile phones have come a long way in the past decades. Even just within the past five years, cell phones have become a hub for all social networking and media, as most come already equipped with social media applications, music and video capabilities, and Internet access.

Apple took the cell phone world by storm in 2007 with the introduction of the iPhone, one of the fastest selling electronic devices in the world. It combined a popular MP3 player with a phone, giving customers the sense that their phones could truly do it all. Prior to this, the most popular Smartphone were those made by Blackberry, which have now been criticized as being too bulky and running slowly.

Microsoft has tried to keep up with Apple’s market, introducing phones that will run the latest version of Windows. Android is another platform competitor, and top electronic brands such as Samsung and HTC have loaded this software onto their Smartphones. Some argue that Android offers more applications than Apple, but iPhone users are often loyal to the brand and will stick with the same platform across all of their electronic devices.

Smartphones have incorporated the idea that a phone can be all a person needs in order to stay connected, whether that is in a business or personal sense. Facebook and Twitter are some of the most popular apps for all mobile users, so individuals can stay in touch with friends and family on the go. Email, Internet browsers, and calendars come standard on most phones, allowing for easy organization. Having a Smartphone is basically a must these days, and millions of users have upgraded.

Securing Your Computer

Most people overlook the importance of providing a security system for their computer. Many times we hit the web running, without a second thought of how to assure that our computer is kept safe from harm. Having antivirus software installed on your computer is essential to keeping it running at its optimum capabilities.

The Internet is built on information. By ensuring your computer is properly secure, you will be able to better protect your own information from theft or file corruption. If you enjoy frequent downloading, be sure and keep your security system up to date. It’s important to be proactive and stay on top of upgrading your security software as new versions are available. Updates not only provide you with a latest version of the software, but they also tend to strengthen any weak points the previous version may have encountered.

Allow your computer a security system with antivirus and anti-spyware. Another aspect to forming a security net for your computer is by implementing a firewall system. Some types of security software will prompt you with a warning when you attempt to visit a potentially damaging site. By ensuring that your computer is properly secure, you can go about your Internet activities with ease. By providing a security system for your platform, you can feel better about downloading files or visiting your favorite site for online casino games. Some types of security software enable its users to encrypt important files or even encrypt an entire drive. You can set the software to automatically scan your entire computer on a regular basis to detect any abnormalities that shouldn’t be allowed access to your system.

While new projects are created everyday for all types of open source applications, it seems that new programs for sharing audio and video files are extremely popular. From peer-to-peer file sharing programs to high-end media players, virtually every type of software needed to obtain and use digital media is available for free from a variety of sources. If you’d like to become part of this free-code revolution, you can! Here are a few ways that you can get involved:

1. As a Developer
If you have technical skills, a wide variety of projects could use your help. While you probably won’t get paid for your work, you will be able to use this as a reference on job applications or in your own consulting work. Of course, it’s also an ego boost to be able to say tell people that you were part of creating or upgrading their favorite piece of free open source code!

2. As a Tester
For those who don’t know how to code, you can always help test. Before a software product is released to the public, it must be carefully evaluated for bugs and other defects that could harm the recipient’s computer system. No one wants to be known for releasing a big flop, and you could be an important part of making sure this doesn’t happen with your favorite open source project.

3. As a Technical Writer
Most open source projects use developers and testers from around the world. Although their programming skills may be top-notch, their other communications skills are sometimes sorely lacking. If you’d like to lend a hand as an expert writer or a native-English speaker, you might be surprised at how many projects need your help!

Even if you’d simply like to offer your opinions about how to make an open source product better, this friendly community will welcome you with open arms! Take a look around and join an open source project today.

4 Comparisons Between ebooks and Traditional Books

Digital books have become very popular, and it’s easier to find companies that are creating digital versions of their publications. If television commercials are to be believed, they’re edging out traditional printed material. Despite their potential, in some areas they still fall a bit short.

Availability
You can find just about any book in digital form, from textbooks to novels, and even magazines and newspapers. Digital books have the advantage of being available to download at any time. If you want a book, you need to either travel to a bookstore or order it online and wait for it to be mailed to you.

Portability
There’s no denying ebooks are easier to transport than regular paperbacks or newspapers. For one, you can store a large amount of books on your portable device than if you were trying to cram the same number of books and magazines into your bag. But, you never have to charge a book and you never have to worry about your magazine running out of battery power.

Cost
While digital editions might be less expensive than their paper counterparts, you need to purchase your digital device first. You can download a reading app directly to your computer, but then you’re stuck at a desk, reading a book from your computer screen. And keep in mind that some programs require you to purchase a subscription before you can begin downloading books and magazines.

Design
In most cases the design of a magazine or newspaper translates very well on screen, sometimes even better than in print. But magazines are designed for print, and their ebook counterparts can seem a bit awkward and not well planned out. For example, if you’re reading a product review and would like more information, there probably isn’t a link to the product’s website. Unless the website is typed in a certain way the software won’t pick it up and it will look like regular text.
